World Cup of Sid James Films 2018 - The Contenders

Taking place on Twitter from Monday December 10, the World Cup of Sid James Films will see 32 of the very best films to feature Sid go head to head in a battle of the public vote. In 2017, the inaugural contest saw Carry On Camping crowned your favourite, beating Carry On Up the Khyber in a hotly contested final.

Voting for this year's tournament will begin on the Sid's Place Twitter page at 12pm on Monday December 10. This will be for the initial group stages, with the top two films in each of the eight groups going through to the knockout rounds.

Just in case you need a little help in making your choices, here are all the runners and riders in this year's big tournament!

Group 1

Carry On Up the Khyber (1968)

Role: Sir Sidney Ruff-Diamond

2017 Performance: Runner-up

2018 Prediction: One of the big favourites. Sure to go far once more

Carry On Cruising (1962)

 Role: Captain Wellington Crowther

2017 Performance: Last 16

2018 Prediction: Should get through the group stage, as Cruising is a fond favourite of many Carry On fans.

Carry On Don't Lose Your Head (1966)

Role: Sir Rodney Ffing/The Black Fingernail

2017 Performance: Group stage

2018 Prediction: A surprise casualty in the group stages last year, this swashbuckling Carry On is in another tough group this year.

What a Carve Up (1961)

Role: Syd Butler

2017 Performance: Group stage

2018 Prediction: Sid forms a superb double act with his Carry On cohort Kenneth Connor here but can this spooky house comedy beat the might of the Carry Ons?

Group 2

Carry On Henry (1971)

Role: King Henry VIII

2017 Performance: Quarter final

2018 Prediction: A regal performance from Sid in one of the finest historical Carry Ons, this should make the quarters at least again this year.

The Lavender Hill Mob (1951)

Role: Lackery

2017 Performance: Last 16

2018 Prediction: An Ealing classic, this is one of the most important films of Sid's career, as it led to him securing a role in Hancock's Half Hour. Should do well again this year.

Carry On Girls (1973)

Role: Sid Fiddler

2017 Performance: Group stage

2018 Prediction: One of the few Carry On films not to make it past the group stage last year. Could be the same story this time but it will probably be close.

The House Across the Lake (1954)

Role: Beverly Forrest

2017 Performance: N/A

2018 Prediction: The first of five new entries this year, this is a decent crime drama that could surprise a few people.

Group 3

Carry On Camping (1969)

Role: Sid Boggle

2017 Performance: Winner

2018 Prediction: Last year's champion is going to take some stopping again this time I feel. Beat Up the Khyber in an epic final in 2017.

The Big Job (1965)

Role: George Brain

2017 Performance: Group stage

2018 Prediction: One of my personal favourite Sid James films, I am hoping The Big Job has a decent run this year.

Quatermass II (1957)

Role: Jimmy Hall

2017 Performance: Group stage

2018 Prediction: This brilliant |Hammer horror features one of Sid's finest dramatic performances. Could possibly make the last 16.

Orders are Orders (1954)

Role: Ed Waggermeyer

2017 Performance: N?A

2018 Prediction: Another new entry, this zany comedy has plenty of star power but could struggle to get out of a tough group.

Group 4

Carry On Cowboy (1965)

Role: The Rumpo Kid

2017 Performance: Quarter final

2018 Prediction: Sid's personal favourite Carry On is likely to go deep into the tournament again this year.

Carry On Up the Jungle (1970)

Role: Bill Boosey

2017 Performance: Last 16

2018 Prediction: Likely to make at least the second round but is in one of the hardest groups to predict this year.

The Titfield Thunderbolt (1953)

.Role: Hawkins

2017 Performance: Group stage

2018 Prediction: This beloved Ealing classic has a chance of making it out of the group but it is going to be tough.

Carry On Agaiu Doctor (1969)

Role: Gladstone Screwer

2017 Performance: Group stage

2018 Prediction: Unlucky to be drawn in another tough group this year. This one is going to be really tight!

Group 5

Carry On Abroad (1972)

Role: Vic Flange

2017 Performance: Quarter final

2018 Prediction: The last of the truly great Carry Ons and my personal favourite, I am predicting big things for Carry On Abroad this year.

Carry On Constable (1960)

Role: Sgt Frank Wilkins

2017 Performance: Last 16

2018 Prediction: This is another tough group which is going to be hard to get out of.

Carry On Doctor (1967)

Role: Charlie Roper

2017 Performance: Last 16

2018 Prediction: A strong contender that could do well if it can escape this tough group.

Too Many Crooks (1959)

Role: Sid

2017 Performance: Group stage

2018 Prediction: A magnificent British comedy with a cast to match. Will that be enough to see this classic get through a tough group?

Group 6

Bless This House (1972)

Role: Sidney Abbott

2017 Performance: Last 16

2018 Prediction: This wonderful adaptation of the TV series proved to be the most popular of the non Carry Ons last year and it should do well again this time round.

Hell Drivers (1957)

Role: Dusty

2017 Performance: Group stage

2018 Prediction: Despite this being just a smaller supporting role for Sid, this brilliant gritty thriller remains a firm favourite amongst fans and should do well.

Carry On Regardless (1961)

Role: Bert Handy

2017 Performance: Group stage

2018 Prediction: The least successful Carry On in last year's tournament. May find it tough again this year.

The Silent Enemy (1958)

Role: Chief Petty Officer Thorpe

2017 Performance: N/A

2018 Prediction: Another new entry, how well this underrated wartime adventure does will depend on how many people have actually seen it.

Group 7

Carry On Cleo (1964)

Role: Mark Antony

2017 Performance: Semi final

2018 Prediction: One of the greatest of all the Carry Ons is sure to be a strong favourite to do very well again this year.

Carry On at Your Convenience (1971)

Role: Sid Plummer

2017 Performance: Semi final

2018 Prediction: There are so many thing to love about At Your Convenience and the film's enduring popularity should see it go far once more..

Carry On Loving (1970)

Role: Sidney Bliss

2017 Performance: Group stage

2018 Prediction: Up against heavyweights Cleo and Convenience, Loving may find it tough to advance from the group.

Dry Rot (1956)

Role: Flash Harry

2017 Performance: N/A

2018 Prediction: A new contender for this year's contest, the fun Dry Rot is an easy watch. In a tough group though.

Group 8

Carry On Cabby (1963)

Role: Charlie Hawkins

2017 Performance: Quarter final

2018 Prediction: Sid and Hattie Jacques really are magnificent together here. Carry On Cabby is a sure-fire favourite to do well.

Carry On Matron (1972)

Role: Sid Carter

2017 Performance: Last 16

2018 Prediction: Likely to challenge for a place in the second round and could easily go further.

Carry On Dick (1974)

Role: Rev. Flasher/Dick Turpin

2017 Performance: Last 16

2018 Prediction: Sid's final Carry On may find it a challenge to get out of the group stage this year.

What a Whopper (1961) 

Role: Harry

2017 Performance: N/A

2018 Prediction: The fifth and final new entry for this year. Can it survive against the might of the Carry Ons?

The five films from 2017 that have been replaced in this year's contest are Make Mine a Million, Three Hats for Lisa, Desert Mice, Tommy the Toreador and Double Bunk.
